THERE WAS NEVER A TIME WHEN THINGS WERE “SIMPLER” AND “MADE MORE SENSE” AND THERE NEVER WILL BE

THE ENTIRETY OF HUMAN HISTORY IS A BIZARRE SERIOUS OF EMOTIONAL SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CONFLICTS ON AN INDIVIDUAL AND GLOBAL SCALE

THE ONLY REASON YOU THINK THINGS WERE BETTER 10 YEARS AGO IS BECAUSE YOU HAD FEWER BRAIN CELLS WORKING

Actually for me things WERE simpler.  There were fifteen channels, candy was literally a penny with no tax, video games were no more advanced than NES and the biggest problem in the general world at the time wasn’t the ‘global climate’ or who was threatening who in the world…..it was the price of gas.  All we knew pre-internet and sensationalization of the general media was that ‘things’ happened out in ‘oil country’ and paying for gas was ‘too much’.   If I wanted to walk to the park, I walked to the park.  No cell phone or worry about anything other than that.  If I wanted to eat something I ate something, no one cared beyond what was IN it and only because we LEGALLY had to know.  Calories and nutrition?  We had Mr. T and PacMan cereal….pure fucking sugar.  No one cared and we were STILL thinner as a whole than children now.  Terrorism was in movies and we watched what was on those fifteen channels because no one could afford a VCR yet.

BY/IN THE 90S ALONE NUCLEAR BOMBS HAD BEEN DROPPED EMPIRES HAD RISEN AND FALLEN WORLD WAR II HAD HAPPENED GENOCIDES HAD OCCURRED THE COLD WAR HAPPENED CAPITALISM TOOK ROOT COMMUNISM BECAME DOCTRINE ACROSS NEARLY HALF THE WORLD’S POPULATION THE IRON CURTAIN FELL THE AMERICAS WERE COLONIZED EUROPE CONTROLLED AND THEN LOST CONTROL OF THE MAJORITY OF THE WORLD CHINA HAD GONE THROUGH MORE THAN A DOZEN DYNASTY CHANGES HAD EXPERIENCED THE TAIPING REBELLION A 40 YEAR CIVIL WAR AND A COMMUNIST REVOLUTION YUGOSLAVIA BROKE UP THE UN WAS FOUNDED NATO DROPPED BOMBS ON SERBIA THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE HAPPENED ALBERT EINSTEIN PUT FORTH A GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY MAHTAHMA GANDHI LED INDIA TO INDEPENDENCE THROUGH NONVIOLENCE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR MALCOLM X AND COUNTLESS OTHERS LED A CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT ACROSS THE UNITED STATES TWO WAVES OF FEMINISM HAPPENED THE STONEWALL RIOTS HAPPENED MATTHEW SHEPHERD WAS MURDERED BILL CLINTON GOT A BLOWJOB AFRICA EXPERIENCED MORE THAN 50 COUPS CIVIL WARS AND REVOLUTIONS ROMANTICISM REALISM MODERNISM AND POSTMODERNISM EMERGED NEON GENESIS EVANGELION CAME OUT

YOUR FUCKING VCR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT

If real life people had a theme song, mine would be “I Am A Rock” by Simon & Garfunkel

Okay, I finished the first episode of the miniseries and I have to stop because my stomach is in knots and my heart hurts because I have feelings.

"

“Everyone here is someone’s daughter,” she says quietly. “Every soldier out there is someone’s son. The only crime, the only crime is to take a life. There is nothing else.”

“And that’s why you don’t fight,” I said.

She turns to me sharply. “To live is to fight,” she snaps. “To preserve life is to fight everything that man stands for.”

"

The Ask and the Answer, by Patrick Ness (via windything)

I have never wanted to be like a character more than I’ve wanted to be like Corrine. She makes me feel ALL the things.

[Spoilers for The Ask and The Answer]

Basically Corrine is part of this order of female doctors (except they’re called healers because only men are called doctors for Various Reasons) that in the past was this semi-terrorist liberation group called The Answer. When this misogynistic mayor/president comes into power they respond by leaving the city to fight against him by bombing the city. Which in some ways was a good idea because the man in control was a very, very bad man who really should not be in power and is also a really bad idea because they end up hurting a lot of civilians, among other things. Those other things include that after the mayor/president comes into power men and women are very strictly segregated and women can only be treated by female doctors and the mayor/president it a VIOLENT misogynist and the bombings of the city is hurting lots of innocent people.

When The Answer leaves Corrine is the ONLY woman who stays behind to provide medical care for women, and eventually men too. She does this because she took an oath, and she’s a pacifist, and she became a doctor for a reason, and she knows that if she lets her self place more value on certain lives over others than she is practicing what that awful, cruel person wants her too. And she is not going to be that person.

The mayor/president ends up branding all of the women in the city with something that slowly kills them and he rounds up people who breaks his rules (which Corrine ultimately does because she heals people indiscriminately) and she DIES in what is essentially a concentration camp.

I honestly cannot think of a person who is more consistently admirable, brave, and true than Corrine in the entire series.

Passionate
You are in touch with your emotions, and sometimes you react before you think. The good news: you don’t tamp down your feelings. The bad news: you sometimes say or do things that you later wish you could take back.
You do not live your life on an even keel; you do not go for long periods without experiencing some mood swings.
Introspective
You like your own company; you’re a very interesting person. Tracking your own mental processes, knowing what you’re thinking and why you do what you do, is important to you. Often, what’s going on in your mind is more compelling than what’s going on outside. For the most part, those with a high score on the “introspective” trait enjoy reading, taking long walks, learning new things, and other solitary activities.
You are not someone who is constantly looking to be among a group of friends; you never feel bored when you are by yourself.
Competitive
You’d rather win than simply get along in most situations. When you know you’re right, you would rather argue your point than compromise. Generally, those with a high score on the “competitive” trait hold leadership positions in industry and are exhilarated by risk-taking both in their professional and personal lives.
You are not always interested in getting along with others in a group, especially if it can mean losing your identity.
Rash
You get excited easily, allow yourself to react without censoring your feelings, and sometimes blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.
You generally don’t consider what you’re about to say before you open your mouth to speak.
Authoritative
You have found that others will often do what you want them to do, without significantly pushing back. You’ve also discovered that many people will accept harsher criticism from you than they would take from anyone else. Many of those with a high score on the “authoritative” trait hold leadership positions in industry.
You do not want to be in the position of always being told what to do. You don’t choose to avoid a confrontation if, through confrontation, you could get your way.
Abrasive
You are accustomed to rubbing people the wrong way; it’s simply what happens when you express your opinions. In your opinion, there’s nothing wrong with being controversial.
You don’t have a “live and let live” attitude when it comes to other people whose opinions clash with yours; you see no reason to give the benefit of the doubt to someone who is just plain wrong.
Aesthetic
You appreciate art, beauty, and design; you know that they are not superficial but absolutely crucial to living the good life. You have good taste, and you’re proud of it. Those with a high score on the “aesthetic” trait are often employed in literary or artistic professions, enjoy domestic activities — doing things around the house — and are enthusiastic about the arts, reading, and travel.
You don’t think it’s pretentious to be moved by art and beauty. You’re not one of those who believe it doesn’t matter what something looks like as long as it does its job.
Intellectual
You are thoughtful, rational, and comfortable in the world of ideas. People find you interesting to talk to. You’re the living embodiment of the saying “You learn something new every day.” In general, those with a high score on the “intellectual” trait are employed in such fields as teaching and research, and are enthusiastic about reading, foreign films, and classical music.
You do not avoid abstract conversation, experimenting with new ideas, or studying new things. It bores you to stick to the straight and narrow of what you already know.
Outspoken
You like to talk. Luckily, you always have something to say, you tell a good story, and people generally enjoy listening to you. It’s no wonder that you’re often the center of attention.
You don’t tend to keep your thoughts to yourself, and you don’t feel you’re imposing on others when you share your thoughts and opinions with them.
Tender
You are gentle with others, both physically and emotionally. You are careful not to upset people and go out of your way to find the nicest way to say something. You naturally focus on the fact that the world is full of wonderful people, places, and things. More often than not, people with a high score on the “tender” trait enjoy spending time with children, love romantic movies, and are enthusiastic about making the world a better place.
You don’t think of yourself as tough-minded or gruff, nor do you need to be seen as some kind of objective source of truth and rationality.
